Troopers received a call from the taxi driver that he had been assaulted by a customer with a knife on Sunday, Feb. 11, at approximately 2:45 a.m.
Investigation determined that the victim was driving the suspect, Manuel Estabon of Brewster, to the bank to obtain payment for the taxi services. Prior to reaching the bank Estabon assaulted the victim with a knife, police said. The victim suffered wounds to the face, neck, and hands but is in stable condition. Estabon, who fled the crime scene, was located in a nearby wooded area, according to police.
Estabon was charged with assault in the first degree, a Class B felony, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a Class A misdemeanor.
Estabon was arraigned before the town of Southeast Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $150,000 cash bail or $300,000 bond.
State Police were assisted on scene by the Putnam County Sherriff’s Office, Village of Brewster Police Department, and the Brewster Southeast Joint Fire District ambulance crew.
